California’s first American Viticultural Area (1981): a small, fog-and-hill grape-growing valley north of San Pablo Bay, not a list of tasting rooms.

Napa Valley is a delimited grape-growing area, not a synonym for “expensive Cabernet.” Napa Valley Vintners state that the valley was named California’s first AVA in 1981, with nested AVAs inside it that name smaller geographies 1. TTB’s appellation system is the legal layer: an AVA is a viticultural area you may put on a wine label when the grape origin rules are met 2. Nested names are still geography. They are not recipes.

The association’s fact sheet describes a dry Mediterranean climate (a climate type they note is uncommon globally), fog that keeps summer nights cool, warmer northern valley days than southern ones, and a small share of California’s wine-grape harvest 3. Carneros, at the south, is the association’s example of marine air off San Pablo Bay; up-valley is less marine. That gradient is why Grape varieties are not planted as wallpaper. Cooler sites hold Acidity; warmer sites ripen different sugar and flavor curves.

This encyclopedia will not document every nested AVA. The teaching point is: twenty miles of valley is enough climate diversity to change wine, and San Francisco sits on the bay that helps cool the southern end. Taste with Tasting wine. Neighbor county: Sonoma County. Craft: Wine.
