Cheese Board Collective

The Cheese Board is one of the few atlas nodes that is honestly both cheese and bread. The collective’s about page: a small cheese store opened in 1967; in 1971 the original owners sold the business to their employees and remained part of a 100% worker-owned shop ¹. They later moved to Shattuck Avenue. The cheese store and bakery is at 1504 Shattuck; the pizzeria is two doors down at 1512 Shattuck ¹. The about page says they sell almost 400 cheeses plus breads and pastries. That count is theirs, on their site, today; it will move.

Arizmendi’s San Francisco site lists The Cheeseboard among independently operated sister cooperatives ². North Berkeley’s “Gourmet Ghetto” reputation is neighboring restaurant history; this page will not inflate it. Acme Bread Company started in the same town, from a restaurant bread problem rather than a cheese counter.
